Parental right to withdraw from Religious Education
Religious Education is an important part of our curriculum. It enables pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal religions and non-religious worldviews, while encouraging respect, reflection and informed discussion.
Parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education.
Any parent or carer considering withdrawal is encouraged to contact the Headteacher first. This provides an opportunity to discuss the school’s RE curriculum, the parts from which the child may be withdrawn and the practical arrangements that would be required. Parents and carers do not have to provide a reason for exercising this right.
A request for withdrawal should be made in writing to the Headteacher at enquiries@sfsm.lincs.sch.uk. Where a request relates to only part of the RE curriculum, it should explain which elements the parent or carer wishes the child to be withdrawn from.
The school will respect the parent’s or carer’s decision and will discuss appropriate supervision and arrangements for the pupil during the relevant lessons.
The right of withdrawal applies specifically to Religious Education. It does not extend to other curriculum subjects where religions, beliefs or related issues may be discussed as part of the subject content.
